What is a pitch deck?

A pitch deck is a short slide presentation that explains a problem, how your offer solves it, why it is credible and what the audience should do next, used in sales meetings and investor fundraising.

This entry covers the sales pitch deck that an account executive presents to a buying team. An investor deck follows a similar story but is judged on the market, traction and the founding team.

Why does a pitch deck matter?

The deck is often the one asset every seller uses in early meetings, and it is usually forwarded to people who were not in the room. A weak deck makes sellers improvise, so each buyer hears a different story. A strong one gives the team a tested narrative with approved proof points, and leaves the champion something to present internally.

How does a pitch deck work? An example

Northwind Analytics rebuilds its sales deck around the buyer's problem. The core version has ten slides, from the change in the market and the cost of the old way to two customer stories and a proposed next step. Sellers swap in one of three industry slides and the buyer's own figures from discovery, share the deck through a tracked link after the meeting, and enablement retires older versions.

What should a sales pitch deck include?

  • The change. What is shifting in the buyer's market or operations that makes the old way harder.
  • The cost of standing still. What the problem costs buyers like this one, in their terms.
  • How you get there. A plain explanation of how the offer works, with only the capabilities that matter to this buyer.
  • Proof. Customer stories, references or data with a named source.
  • The next step. A specific proposal for what happens after the meeting and who should be involved.

How do you build a sales pitch deck step by step?

  1. Start from the messaging framework. Pull the problem, value and proof points from the approved messaging so the deck and other content agree.
  2. Write the story before the slides. Draft one sentence per slide and test that the sequence makes sense read aloud.
  3. Build in room to tailor. Add swappable slides for industries and personas and a slide for the buyer's own numbers.
  4. Publish one current version. Put the approved deck in one place, retire old versions and track which slides buyers spend time on.

How do you measure a pitch deck?

  • Use of each deck version, by segment and stage
  • Viewing time per slide when the deck is shared digitally
  • Meetings that end with an agreed next step
  • Decks forwarded to other stakeholders in the buying group
  • Outdated deck versions still being sent to buyers

Approved deck versions can live in the Revspire Content Hub, where duplicate merging and versioning keep every shared link current and asset usage and performance analytics show which decks sellers use.

Pitch deck: frequently asked questions

How many slides should a sales pitch deck have?

There is no fixed number. Keep the core story short enough to present in well under half the meeting, so most of the time goes to the buyer's questions, and move detail into an appendix.

What is the difference between a sales deck and an investor pitch deck?

A sales deck persuades a buyer that your offer solves their problem better than the alternatives. An investor deck persuades investors that the company will grow, so it adds the market, traction, business model, team and the funding ask.

Should you send the pitch deck before the meeting?

Usually after. Sending it first invites buyers to judge the slides without the conversation. Share a short agenda beforehand, then send a version tailored to what you heard.
