What is virtual selling?

Virtual selling is selling to buyers through remote channels, such as video calls, digital sales rooms, email and messaging, instead of in-person meetings, across every stage of the deal from discovery to signature.

Most B2B deals mix remote and in-person contact, so the term usually describes the remote parts of a hybrid process, including the time between meetings when buyers review material alone.

Why does virtual selling matter?

In a room, a seller reads body language, meets people in the corridor and sees who really decides. On a screen, half the buying committee may never join a call, and the deal moves forward in internal meetings the seller never sees. Virtual selling works when the seller plans for that: shorter, sharper meetings, one shared place for every document and next step, and a way to see which stakeholders are engaging between calls.

How does virtual selling work? An example

A seller at Contoso Health is working a deal with a hospital group across three sites, without traveling. After the first video call she sets up a shared deal room with a recap video, the mutual action plan and a security pack for IT. Engagement data shows the finance lead has opened the pricing page twice but never joined a call, so she books a short session with him alone.

What does a virtual selling toolkit include?

  • Video meetings. A dependable tool, a good camera and microphone, and an agenda shared before every call.
  • A shared deal space. One place, such as a digital sales room, for every document, recording and next step in the deal.
  • A mutual action plan. Dated tasks with owners on both sides, visible to everyone in the buying group.
  • Engagement data. Signals that show which stakeholders open what between meetings, so follow-up is specific.

How do you run a virtual sales process step by step?

  1. Map the buying group early. Ask who else is involved in the first call, because remote deals hide stakeholders who never join a meeting.
  2. Move everything to one shared space. Replace long email threads with a deal room that holds the plan, documents and recordings.
  3. Follow the engagement. Check who opened what after each meeting and tailor the next touch to that person.
  4. Agree the next step before hanging up. End each call with a dated action in the mutual action plan, owned by someone on each side.

How do you measure virtual selling?

  • Stakeholders engaged per opportunity, across meetings and deal room visits
  • Buyer activity between meetings, such as content opened and forwarded
  • Mutual action plan tasks completed on time by both sides
  • Days between meetings on active deals
  • Meetings that end with an agreed, dated next step

Virtual selling: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between virtual selling and inside sales?

Inside sales is a role: reps who sell remotely, often with shorter cycles. Virtual selling is a way of working that any seller can use, including field sellers who run parts of a complex deal remotely.

What tools do you need for virtual selling?

A reliable video meeting tool, a CRM, a shared space such as a digital sales room for documents and the mutual action plan, and engagement analytics that show what buyers open between calls. Recording and practice tools help sellers improve on camera.

How do you keep buyers engaged between virtual meetings?

Send a short recap with the agreed next steps, keep every document in one shared place, give each stakeholder material for their role, and follow up on what they actually opened instead of sending generic check-ins.
