What is content ROI?

Content ROI is the return a company gets from its sales content, measured as the revenue influence and seller time savings it produces compared with the cost to create, maintain and distribute it.

A simple form is the value attributed to content, minus content cost, divided by content cost. The hard part is the value side, which usually combines content-influenced revenue with time saved for sellers.

Why does content ROI matter?

Content carries costs that rarely appear in one budget line: agency fees, designer and product marketing time, translation, tools, and the seller hours spent searching for or rebuilding assets. Leaders asked to justify that spend need more than view counts. Content ROI frames the question in budget terms, shows which asset types earn back their production cost, and makes the case for retiring content that needs upkeep but never reaches a buyer.

How does content ROI work? An example

A product marketing team spends a quarter producing an industry kit: a deck, two case studies and an ROI calculator. Over the next two quarters, sellers share the kit in a set of opportunities, and buyers open the calculator in most of the won ones. The team weighs the influenced revenue and the seller hours saved on custom decks against the kit's production and upkeep cost, and decides to build a second kit.

How do you measure content ROI?

  • Full content cost: production, tools, agency fees, translation and upkeep
  • Content-influenced pipeline and revenue, with the influence rule stated
  • Seller time saved on searching for or recreating assets
  • Share of produced assets used with buyers at least once
  • Cost per asset actually used, by asset type

The Revspire Content Hub supplies the usage side of a content ROI calculation with asset usage and performance analytics, and its content-gap insights show where new production is needed.

Content ROI: frequently asked questions

How do you calculate content ROI?

Subtract the total cost of the content from the value attributed to it, then divide by the cost. Value usually combines content-influenced revenue and seller time saved; cost includes production, tools, translation and maintenance. State the attribution rule you used.

What is the difference between content ROI and content attribution?

Content attribution connects assets to the deals they appeared in. Content ROI goes one step further and weighs that value against what the content cost to produce and maintain, so it answers whether the investment was worth making.

Why is content ROI hard to measure?

Deals involve many touches, so no single asset can claim full credit, and much of content's value is indirect, such as a rep learning from a case study before a call. Treat content ROI as a directional comparison between asset types rather than an exact figure.
