What is a sales skills assessment?

A sales skills assessment measures a seller's current ability in defined skills, such as discovery, negotiation and objection handling, against a target level for their role, to find gaps and focus development.

It combines several kinds of evidence, such as scored role-plays, call reviews, knowledge tests and manager observation, because any single source can mislead. Results are usually shown as a skills matrix by rep and by team.

Why does a sales skills assessment matter?

Training budgets often go to whatever topic was loudest in the last pipeline review. An assessment shows where the gaps actually are, rep by rep and across the team, so enablement can fund the few skills that matter and managers can coach each person on their weakest one. Repeated over time, the same assessment shows whether a program closed the gap it was meant to close, which completion data can never show.

How does a sales skills assessment work? An example

An enablement lead assesses 40 account executives on six skills from the company's competency framework, using two scored role-plays, a product knowledge test and each manager's rating from recent calls. The matrix shows that most reps meet the standard on product knowledge but fall short on negotiating with procurement. Enablement builds a negotiation track for the whole team, while managers coach individual gaps in their one-to-ones.

How do you measure a sales skills assessment?

  • Share of reps at or above the target level for each skill
  • Largest gaps by team, role and tenure
  • Score change after a training program or coaching focus
  • Agreement between self-ratings, manager ratings and scored practice
  • How skill scores relate to deal outcomes, treated as correlation rather than proof

Sales skills assessment: frequently asked questions

How do you assess sales skills?

Define the skills and target levels for each role, then gather more than one kind of evidence: scored role-plays, reviews of real calls, short knowledge tests and manager observation. Compare the results with the target to find the gaps worth training or coaching.

What is the difference between a skills assessment and a sales certification?

A skills assessment is diagnostic: it maps strengths and gaps across many skills to plan development. A certification is a pass-or-fail gate on one skill or message, required before a seller uses it with buyers.

What sales skills should be assessed?

Usually prospecting, discovery, value messaging, presenting or demoing, objection handling, negotiation, closing and deal management, plus product and market knowledge. The exact list and target levels should come from your competency framework and differ by role.
