What is a discovery call?

A discovery call is an early sales conversation in which the seller asks questions to understand the buyer's problem, its business impact, their priorities and how they make decisions, before presenting a solution.

Discovery is not a single meeting: it starts on the first call and continues as new stakeholders join. The first call decides whether the deal is qualified and what the next step is.

Why does a discovery call matter?

Everything later in the deal depends on what the seller learns here. A demo built on weak discovery shows generic features, a proposal without agreed metrics invites a price fight, and missed stakeholders surface late as blockers. Strong discovery gives the seller a quantified problem, a picture of the decision process and a reason for the buyer to take the next meeting. Because buyers now arrive well researched, the call also has to add insight, not just collect answers.

How does a discovery call work? An example

An account executive opens a 30-minute discovery call by confirming the agenda and asking what prompted the meeting. She asks how the team handles onboarding today, what it costs in time, who else feels the problem and what happens if nothing changes. She shares one short insight from similar companies, then agrees a next step: a working session with the operations lead and IT, booked before the call ends.

How do you measure discovery call quality?

  • Conversion from discovery to the next qualified stage
  • Share of discovery calls that end with a booked next step
  • Talk-to-listen balance and open questions asked in recorded calls
  • Qualification fields captured after discovery, such as pain, metrics and decision process
  • Role-play scores for discovery skills

Discovery call: frequently asked questions

What questions should you ask on a discovery call?

Ask about the current situation, the problem and its business impact, what has already been tried, who else is affected, what a good result looks like, what drives the timeline, and how the organization makes and approves this kind of decision.

What is the difference between a discovery call and a demo?

Discovery is about the buyer: their problem, its impact and how they decide. A demo is about the solution. A good demo is built from discovery and shows only what matters for the problems the buyer has confirmed.

How do you prepare for a discovery call?

Research the company, the contact's role and recent changes such as new leadership, funding or initiatives. Form a hypothesis about their likely problem, prepare open questions to test it, and decide which next step you will propose.
