Why does sales velocity matter?
Pipeline value alone hides how fast that pipeline turns into revenue. Two teams with the same pipeline can produce very different results if one wins more often or closes faster. Sales velocity puts the four levers in one equation, so leaders can see which one is holding growth back and test changes against it: more qualified opportunities, larger deals, a higher win rate or a shorter cycle. It is most useful tracked over time within one segment, because enterprise and mid-market deals have very different cycles.
How does sales velocity work? A worked example
A mid-market team has 40 qualified opportunities in the quarter, an average deal size of $60,000, a win rate of 0.25 and an average sales cycle of 120 days. Its sales velocity is 40 × 60,000 × 0.25 ÷ 120, or $5,000 of revenue per day. If the team shortens the cycle to 100 days and nothing else changes, velocity rises to $6,000 per day.
How do you calculate sales velocity?
- Number of opportunities: qualified opportunities in the period, using one consistent definition
- Average deal size: the average closed-won value for the same segment
- Win rate: closed-won deals divided by all closed deals, written as a decimal
- Sales cycle length: the average number of days from opportunity creation to closed-won
- Velocity by segment, team and quarter, noting which of the four inputs moved
Revspire Digital Sales Rooms put mutual action plans with owners and due dates and real-time buyer engagement analytics inside each deal, so sellers can see which steps and stakeholders are holding up a close.

Sales velocity: frequently asked questions
What is a good sales velocity?
There is no universal benchmark, because velocity depends on deal size, segment and cycle length. Compare your own velocity by segment over time, and look at which of the four inputs changed whenever it rises or falls.
How do you increase sales velocity?
Improve any of the four inputs without hurting the others: create more qualified opportunities, raise average deal size, win a larger share of deals through tighter qualification and multithreading, or shorten the cycle with clear next steps and mutual action plans. Watch for trade-offs, such as discounting to close faster.
Is sales velocity the same as deal velocity?
Not quite. Sales velocity measures revenue per day across a whole pipeline. Deal velocity usually describes how fast individual opportunities move through stages, which feeds the sales cycle length used in the velocity formula.
