What is win rate in sales?

Win rate is the share of decided sales opportunities that a team wins, calculated as won deals divided by all won and lost deals for a defined period and set of opportunities.

The definition matters more than the formula: state which stage an opportunity must reach to count, and whether deals that end in no decision count as losses. Most teams should count them.

Why does win rate in sales matter?

Win rate shows how well a team converts the pipeline it already has, which makes it one of the clearest signals of sales effectiveness. Combined with deal size, cycle length and pipeline volume, it drives capacity planning and the coverage leaders need to hit a target. Broken down by segment, competitor, rep or play, it shows where enablement should act: a low rate against one competitor points to positioning, while heavy late-stage losses point to qualification or the buying process.

How do you calculate win rate? An example

A RevOps lead calculates last quarter's win rate for opportunities that reached the qualified stage. Of the 40 that closed, 12 were won, 14 were lost to a competitor and 14 ended with no decision, so the win rate is 12 divided by 40. Splitting the losses shows that stalled deals cost as many wins as competitors did, so enablement invests in business-case content and mutual action plans before another battlecard.

How should you report win rate?

  • Win rate by segment, deal size band and region
  • Win rate against each named competitor
  • No-decision losses reported separately from competitive losses
  • Win rate by rep, hiring cohort and manager
  • Win rate for deals with and without a given play, asset or deal room

Revspire Digital Sales Rooms track real-time buyer engagement in each deal, giving teams stakeholder-level signals to set against win and loss outcomes.

Win rate: frequently asked questions

How do you calculate win rate?

Divide the number of won opportunities by the total number of won and lost opportunities closed in the same period, then express it as a percentage. Count only opportunities past an agreed qualification stage, and treat no-decision outcomes as losses.

What is a good win rate?

It depends on segment, deal size, sales motion and how strictly you qualify, so external benchmarks are only a rough guide. Compare against your own history for the same segment and definition, and watch the trend rather than a single quarter.

What is the difference between win rate and close rate?

Many teams use the terms interchangeably. When they differ, close rate usually compares closed-won deals with all opportunities or leads created, including ones still open or disqualified, while win rate counts only decided opportunities. State your definition in every report.
