How do you handle the “we already have a vendor” objection?

To handle the “we already have a vendor” objection, don’t attack the incumbent. Ask what the buyer likes about it, what they would change and when the contract renews. Then focus on one gap that matters to them and offer a low-risk way to compare, such as a side-by-side test on a real use case.

Buyers rarely use the textbook wording. You will hear it as:

  • “We already have a vendor for that.”
  • “We’re already using another solution.”
  • “We’re happy with our current vendor.”
  • “We just renewed with them.”

What does the buyer usually mean?

The same words can hide different concerns. Work out which one you are facing before you answer:

  • Switching is work. Migration, retraining and paying for two tools during the overlap all sit on the buyer’s side.
  • They chose the incumbent. The buyer may have picked the current vendor, so criticism of it lands as criticism of them.
  • They are under contract. There may be months or years left, plus a notice period before renewal.
  • They don’t know what they are missing. The current tool does the job they bought it for, and nobody has shown them what has changed since.
  • It is a brush-off. On a cold call, “we already have someone” can simply mean “not now, not you”.

A response framework for the “we already have a vendor” objection

Use these steps in order. Most of the work is in the questions, before you make any case of your own.

  1. Step 1: Respect the choice

Acknowledge the incumbent and ask what made them choose it. You learn their buying criteria and lower their guard.

  2. Step 2: Ask what they would change

“If you could change one thing about how it works today, what would it be?” is the question that opens most incumbent deals.

  3. Step 3: Find the timeline

Ask when the contract ends, how much notice it needs and when they would normally review it. That date shapes everything else.

  4. Step 4: Size one gap

Pick the gap the buyer cares about most and put a number on it. One clear gap beats a feature list.

  5. Step 5: Offer a fair comparison

Propose a side-by-side on a real task, or a call with a team that switched. Make it easy to say yes without committing to switch.

  6. Step 6: Make switching smaller

Show who does the migration work, how long the overlap lasts and what the buyer’s team has to do. Usually it is less than they fear.

Example talk tracks

Adapt the wording to your product and the buyer’s numbers. The companies and figures are illustrative.

  • Cold call: “We already have someone for that.”

“That makes sense; most teams I call already use something. What made you choose them? And if you could change one thing about how it works today, what would it be?”

  • Discovery: “We just renewed.”

“Good to hear it’s working. When does the contract come up next, and how far ahead would you normally start looking at options? I’d rather send you something useful three months before then than chase you now.”

  • Champion is interested, the team uses the incumbent

“Would it help if we ran the same task in both tools, with your team watching, on one real deal? If ours isn’t clearly better at the thing you care about, you’ll have your answer and so will I.”

What do reps score on the “we already have a vendor” objection in practice?

The competitor objection, “we’re already using another solution”, scored 3.5 out of 5, the middle of the five objection types. Reps handled it better than the status quo and price but worse than timing and security: there is usually a battlecard to lean on, but the rep still has to find the one gap that matters to this buyer.

Run this scenario before a live call. Swap in your own buyer, product and numbers once the structure feels natural.

The buyer
Head of Sales Enablement at a 1,200-person cybersecurity company (invented). The team renewed with the incumbent eight months ago and the contract runs for another 16 months. She is frustrated that reps cannot find content, but she chose the current tool.
Their opening line
“We’re already using another solution, and we renewed last year. I don’t see us switching.”
The rep’s goal
Learn what she would change and when the contract can end, then agree a fair comparison or a dated follow-up before the renewal window.
Score the rep on
  • Does not criticize the incumbent or the buyer’s choice
  • Asks what she likes about the current tool and what she would change
  • Establishes the renewal date and notice period
  • Puts a number on one gap that matters to her
  • Proposes a low-risk comparison on a real task
  • Confirms a dated next step

Frequently asked questions

What does “we already have a vendor” mean?

It means the buyer already pays for a product that does some or all of what you sell. It can be a real constraint (a contract with time left), a preference for the tool they chose, or a brush-off on a first call.

How do you respond when a prospect already uses a competitor?

Ask what made them choose it and what they would change, find out when the contract renews, then focus on the one gap that matters most to them and offer a fair, low-risk comparison on a real task.

Should you criticize the competitor?

No. The buyer may have chosen it, and criticism makes them defend it. Ask questions that let the buyer describe the gap, and compare on facts their team can check.

When is the best time to sell against an incumbent?

Before the renewal window opens. Ask for the contract end date and the notice period early, and plan the evaluation so a decision can land before the notice deadline.

Does a battlecard help with the competitor objection?

Yes, as preparation. A sales battlecard gives reps the landmine questions and proof points for a named competitor; the conversation still starts with what this buyer would change.
